What is Structural Integration?

Structural Integration (SI) is a modality of bodywork that serves to unwind tension patterns in the body. Through a progression of five sessions, organized into what is called a series, we work to identify the core holding pattern that is causing deficits in your horse’s range of motion. Whether it was an injury, stress, old habits, or something as simple as gravity, the SI series is designed to restructure the connective tissue to restore range of motion and allow the body freedom to move efficiently.
The higher the demands placed on the horse, such as in high performance disciplines, the greater the chances for these patterns to arise. But all horses are susceptible to developing holding patterns that require work to dissolve. The beginning of the series is my opportunity to get to know the horse and its patterns. Using the first session as a "get to know each other," I am able to get a feel for what the horse can tolerate, what may be the larger issue, and in general, how to optimize the rest of their series. As the series progresses, we dive deeper into the body, focusing on each section of the body (i.e front and hind limbs, the barrel) to find the root cause of the dysfunctional pattern that may be causing general discomfort or limiting performance capacity. The end of the series is focused on bringing the rest of the body up to speed with the work of the previous sessions. But the best part is that sessions are individualized for each horse, depending on what is revealed. As we systematically unwrap tension patterns and restricted tissues, the body can then integrate a new movement pattern that allows for greater range of motion and better comfort.
